GOP gets on Coffman bandwagon

The note from state Republican Party godfather Bill Armstrong arrived hand-delivered at Secretary of State Mike Coffman's office the day after Coffman's win in the 6th Congressional District primary, reports John Ingold.

"I agree with what Wil told his supporters last night," Armstrong wrote, referring to his son, Wil Armstrong, one of three foes Coffman vanquished in the primary to win the Republican nomination. " 'Mike Coffman will make a great congressman.' "

That note, as much as anything, signifies the newfound status Coffman has within his own party after his runaway win. Party leaders who once worked against him are now getting behind him.

Oil, green donors fix on Colorado Senate race

Targeting Colorado's U.S. Senate race as a top political priority, energy companies and environmental activists are pumping money into Bob Schaffer's and Mark Udall's campaign coffers.

Environmental groups from 2007 through June gave more money to Democrat Udall than any other Senate candidate or incumbent nationwide, according to data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics.

Udall's campaign took in $116,324 from the Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters and other green groups through their political action committees. Udall's total is nearly double that of the next closest Senate recipient.

Oil and gas interests are backing Republican Schaffer. Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Exxon Mobil and others through their PACs funneled $104,900 into his campaign. Schaffer's contributions from oil and gas groups rank ninth for all Senate races.

Polis' win a big gain for gay movement

Boulder Democrat Jared Polis didn't make much noise about making history, but his victory in Tuesday's 2nd Congressional District primary marks a milestone for a gay and lesbian political movement that's anticipating a banner year.

Expected to win the general election in November, Polis is poised to become the first openly gay man to be elected to Congress as a freshman. Other congressmen have come out while in office and won re-election, and Wisconsin voters a decade ago elected the first lesbian freshman to Congress.
