Speaker Pro Tem Curry?

Unless House Democrats plan to appoint a Republican to the No. 2 spot in the lower chamber, Gunnison Rep. Kathleen Curry will be announced as Speaker Pro Tem tomorrow afternoon.

A press release from the House majority office all but named her this afternoon when staff announced a lawmaker from the Western Slope is slated for a leadership gig.

Curry's the only Democrat left on the Slope in a year when Republicans knocked off assumed House Speaker Rep. Bernie Buescher in a tight election. He served Mesa County.

(Some count Rep. Christine Scanlan from Dillon as a Sloper, others characterize her district as central mountains. At any rate, she was appointed in late 2007, won re-election and did not throw her name into the ring for speaker as Curry did.)

The pro tem post - named by new House Speaker Terrance Carroll - is the only leadership position left to fill, unless they invent a new one as Senate Republicans did last week for Centennial Sen. Nancy Spence.

In her brief caucus campaign for Speaker last week, Curry emphasized the need to reach out to non-Front Range voters if Dems want to keep the majority in the House.

Sounds like her argument hit home.
