Protesters at a Recreate 68 event at the Denver Mint this afternoon swarmed conservative commentator Michelle Malkin, circling around her and shouting at her until she left the area.

Malkin, a blogger, syndicated columnist, sometimes Fox New commentator and author of a controversial book defending racial profiling in the war on terror, showed up at the event to “levitate” the mint shortly after 5 p.m. today. She said she was there for work.

Protesters, led by 9/11 truther Alex Jones, seized upon her appearance, soon crowding around and leading to a brief shoving match.

“Get out of here Malkin, you shame!” a red-faced Jones shouted.

Police mostly stood by, and Malkin eventually left, as Jones followed.

Meanwhile, the mint levitation protest fell short of its titular goal. Several dozen protesters held hands – stretching about half of a block down Cherokee Street – and chanted “Love. Peace. Justice.” Some in the crowd tossed plastic coins into the air, to symbolize money falling out of the mint. The protest, led in part by “Yippie pie thrower” Aron Kay, was light-heartedly intended to raise the mint and shake money out of it.

“I feel that money has been taken from the poor and given to the war,” Kay said. “The money could be put to better use.”

Police officers on horseback lined part of the sidewalk in front of the mint and a line of officers also stood across the street. Protester Rick Fitzgerald said the goal of the event was to call attention to the wealth disparity in the country, during what others protesters termed the “orgy of opulence” during the Democratic National Convention.

“I need to concentrate; I’m trying to levitate the mint,” Fitzgerald said with a grin. “… I think it’s moving.”

After about a half hour, the crowd dispersed, leaving only a handful of reporters, a smattering of fake coins and several piles of horse poop on the sidewalk.

Good reporting.

Way to mention how they yelled "Kill Michelle Malkin." Good reporting, slick.
