Delegate Stephanie Cosgrove will start college this fall as she pursues her goal of a political science major. But first she will be attending the Democratic National Convention as one of its youngest delegates.
Cosgrove, who turned 19 last week and graduated from high school in Cherokee, Iowa last spring, said she became involved in the election after an Obama organizer gave a talk to her high school class. She worked her way through the district and state conventions and won her national delegate seat with a two-minute speech that put her onĀ top of a list of 11 contenders.
"I think young people are going to make the biggest difference in this election," Cosgrove said. "We've become much more aware of how important politics are in our daily lives."
Cosgrove will be missing her first week of classes at Northwest Iowa Community College to be at the convention but said she thinks her U.S. history and American Government professors will give her some credit for her stint as a delegate. She will also be keeping a journal for the Cherokee museum where she works part-time.
