2008 Presidential Campaign Electoral Victory Map

This interactive map allows you to create scenarios for winning the White House. Start off with "Select a Starting View" such as "2004 Actual Results." From there, click individual states to red (Republican), blue (Democratic) or beige (Undecided) to change the electoral vote totals. It takes 270 votes to win. So, if Ohio had gone for John Kerry in 2004, he would have won. Speculation that traditionally Republican-voting Western states may swing Democratic in the 2008 presidential election makes this map particularly intriguing. For example, if Colorado, New Mexico and Montana were to vote Democratic in the 2008 presidential race - and all other states voted as they did in 2004 - there would be a 269 to 269 tie in electoral votes. What happens then? The president would be decided by the House of Representatives, with each state delegation having one vote. The vice-president would be elected by the Senate.
