Oregon Superdelegate Endorses Obama

Breaking ranks with the block of nine uncommitted superdelegates in Oregon, this morning Rep. David Wu announced he is backing Sen. Barack Obama.

A discussion about policy issues with Obama yesterday helped him make that decision.

"I think the man is thoughtful and he's a natural conciliator," Wu told a reporter at The Oregonian. "After the last eight years, we need a real conciliator."

The recent criticism that Obama may be too "elite" or "intellectual" for rural voters is not something that Wu agrees with.

He "may sometimes give people the wrong impression," said Wu. "But I think that at a very personal level, he really gets it. I think that growing up poor is a pretty good proxy for what's been happening in rural America."

Of Oregon's 12 superdelegates, the four who are now committed are evenly split: two for Sen. Hillary Clinton, two for Sen. Barack Obama.
